June 01 - Currie / Hon-E-Kor Challenge Matches at Currie Park Golf Course

Attention All Chops!!! On Sunday June 1st the Hon-E-Kor Men's Club will invade the "National" for the 1st of our Challenge Matches of the year. We need 24 players to take on the interlopers from the north!! They beat us at their place last year and it's time to return the favor. The format will be 6 holes best ball, 6 holes 2 man scramble and 6 holes singles match play. It promises to be a great time, so let's get signed up!!! It's your best 4 of 7 rounds based on how you perform in relation to an assigned target score calculated with your handicap index. You can chose what tee box you play from and often get another stroke or two for doing so. It's a fun series!!

I think we had a good day today, the sun is finally starting to show itself and I thought the course was in good condition (I saw enough of it to know this!) albeit a little wet in some places.

Second Team Opens Chase for 6th Straight with 3rd place Finish at Brown Deer

Our Second team had a workmanlike day at Brown Deer Saturday, finishing third in the event behind Brown Deer and Greenfield.  It was a tough day with soft wet fairways, no roll, high winds and cool temperatures, although it warmed near the end.  We played lift, clean, and place through the green, which helped, but still it was a tough day to tackle the course.  Brown Deer won the event with 251 points, Greenfield was next with 239, and we took third with 213.  Whitnall took 200 points, and Dretzka, Grant, and Oakwood all finished with 158 or less.  Ten of our guys took 12 or more points, Brian Pederson and Darrell Frenzel leading the way with 22.  Jeff, “I go low everywhere”, Camosy took 20, and Doug Bowring and Steve Jaeger took 19 each.  Mike O’Neil was our medalist with 81, taking 18 points.

O’Neil, Bowring, and Jaeger won skins on holes 3, 7, and 10 respectively. 

A summary of the results is listed below.  Last year at this point in the proceedings we found ourselves in 5th place 67 points behind Grant and 60 behind Brown Deer, so I would say right now we have everyone just about where we want them.

Next up is Grant in just 3 weeks on May 25.  If you like your chances on that track, and you'd like to play, let me know.

CURRIE UPDATE 4-27-14

Well, the 2014 golf season is off and running for the Currie Men’s Club. Or after the weather we had for our initial weekend of events, perhaps I should say “we’re blowing in the wind”.

With temperatures barely above 50 degrees and winds blowing 20-40 mph this weekend, we had an excellent turnout for the conditions. Saturday at The Bog we had 28 members & 8 guests participate in the Member/Guest outing, and Sunday at Washington County we had 25 intrepid souls that tackled the conditions for our first competitive event.

Making their Currie club debuts as new members were Jesse Alba, Tom Beatty, Chris Brock, Quentin Hart-Slater and Tim Rave. Other new members that I’d like to welcome, but who’ve not yet made their initial club appearance are Tim Hoy and Jim Sauceda. I’d also like to welcome back to the club, after a brief 1 season absence, Jerry Loche and Mike O’Neil (Mike celebrated his return with a smooth 72 at Washington County in very challenging conditions).

Looking forward at our next event at Whispering Springs, I’d like to make everyone aware of a change in format for this outing. Rather than playing a Net Partners format, we’ve opted to instead have the competition be individual medal play (net). After receiving feedback from a number of members we’ve decided that when we do hold a Net Partner format we will provide everyone with the opportunity to select their own partners. Most likely we will conduct the Net Partner event at either Currie (June 14^th) or Hartford (June 21^st).

Additionally I wanted to share an update on the Match Play format. Typically this event has been held in 4 flights (single elimination). However, in consideration of our membership size (looks like 54 members), we’ve been considering going to 8-man flights and double elimination. The reason for considering the change is to avoid the need for having (10) 1^st-round byes, and trying to determine who would benefit from those byes in each flight. If we did go to the smaller flights we’d only have (2) 1^st-round byes needed. There are drawbacks to the smaller flights, and so we are continuing to consider our options over the next week. If you’d like to comment on this topic, please do so via e-mail to Brian Pederson, Jeff Camosy, and myself.

Lastly, I’d like to congratulate Jeff Camosy for his role in a successful kick-off to the 2014 season. This is Jeff’s first go-around as Tournament Director/ Vice President, and from everything that I observed (as well as comments from participants this weekend) our scoring process and pairings both went very smoothly.

Tournament is open to all MCPLA Members. Senior status is age 55 on or before May 17th. Mid-Am status is age 25-54 on or before May 17. Non MCPLA members can enter by paying and additional $10 entry fee.

FLIGHTS
Number of flights will be determined by the number of entries received. Net scores will be used only. Handicaps as of May 1st will be used. Play will be within flights both days with NO repairing for Sunday’s round.

Noteworthy

·         The 4/26 event at the Bog is a member/guest event and you will have an opportunity to register guests during the registration process from this point forward. If you have already registered yourself and would still like to register a guest then please send me the name of your guest and I’ll get them registered for you.

·         You will register for all other events as an individual and pairings will be made shortly preceding the event.

·         The deadline for registering for all these non-TOC related Currie events will be the Monday morning (9am) preceding each event so we have time to communicate any necessary tee time changes to the respective courses.

Kick-Off Meeting Minutes

New Club President Mark Cuthbert started the meeting by introducing; Vice President Jeff Camosy, Treasurer Tom Condella, Secretary Bill Zolandz, First Team Captain Jim Fossett, Second Team Captain Jack Bruss, Tour of County Coordinator Steve Amble, Match Play Coordinator Brain Pederson, MCPLA Representative Dan Webb, and Membership Coordinator Steve Jaeger.

Milwaukee County Golf Services Manager Chet Hendrickson, and prior Currie Park PGA Professional Eric Gitter, introduced the new Currie Park PGA Professional, Scott Walecki.

The meeting was attending by approximately 25 current members and 5 prospective new members.  Dues of $110 were collected, along with optional $50 dues for TOC.  Those not attending this meeting, forward your dues payment to Tom Condella.

The 2014 schedule was presented, you can now sign up for any of the club events via Blue Golf.  Dan Webb is looking into adding two to three Challenge Match events to the schedule.  Scott Walecki is looking into hosting a Spring and/or Fall Scramble at Currie Park.

Del Kolasinski; Outside Sales Representative at Callaway Golf gave a presentation of new golf club technology and the importance of having a proper club fitting.

Tom Jardanowski talked about the Currie Cup event scheduled for August 31st.  As in the past, just sign up for this event, captains will choose teams and shirt colors.  Tom will host the putting contest.

Spring Kick-Off Meeting

Spring Kick-Off Meeting is scheduled for Monday March 17th at 6:30 pm at the Currie Park Clubhouse.

Bring your checkbook for collection of dues of $110.  For those wanting additional golf add $50 for the seven event Tour of the County (TOC).

Have a look at your strategy for playing a one man scramble!

#1 Hit your tee ball in the Fairway
#2 If you miss the Fairway and it is in the trees, walk to your ball and hit a second shot (save your scramble shots) - get the second shot as close to the green or back into play!
#3 Use your first scramble shot (one of two extra shots) to hit your second or third shot close to the pin.
# 4 Use your second scramble shot (two of two extra shots) on taking to putts at making par or birdie.
# 5 Key is to attempt to hit fairway on your tee shot or at least give yourself a shot at hitting it near the green.

If you miss your two attempts at PAR, pick up and move to the next tee box, PLEASE!!
